In all seriousness, this is an animation error. Her “butterfly wing” bow is only half there. Plus, this was animated by Masahiro Ando, who’s infamous for being a somewhat subpar animator.

• Her ear is folded over, gross
• Her nose looks like a toucan’s
• Her arm is just messed up

And look at that little girl in the background. WHAT’S WRONG WITH HER EYES. And that guy in the green shirt.

Trivia

• This was an advanced version of Fire Soul.
• After the Makaiju arc, this attack was never seen again in the anime.
• The mantra Sailor Mars chanted while blessing her ofuda was different than the usual one she said for Akuryou Taisan.
• Like the English dub of Akuryou Taisan, the flashes of the fiery statue were replaced by flames from Fire Soul.
• Compared to its first appearance, the firebird’s “screech” sounded different in episode 59.

One of the most unique art styles for the anime was Ando’s approach. Characters were given wider, chubby faces and somewhat stumpy bodies. Everyone looked younger, almost childlike. However, facial expressions were more detailed, especially the comical or intense ones.

Bodies were often truncated in proportions, and eyebrows were thicker than the average thin line used on anime faces. The opaque colors and slightly stout figures created a sense of weight in most episodes.

Ando’s style was last used in episode 170. Sailor Stars had hired a whole new animation staff for the remainder of the series.

Episodes directed: 11, 16, 23, 27, 33, 40, 49, 54, 60, 65, 71, 75, 78, 83, 90, 96, 101, 108, 114, 127, 132, 138, 144, 150, 153, 160, 164, 170.
