In many ways, Neo-Queen Serenity’s dress is an evolution of Princess Serenity’s dress. In this post, I’ll be highlighting the differences between these two outfits.
NOTE: I’ll be reviewing the anime versions of these dresses. The manga versions are a bit different.
There are two very noticeable differences between the Princess’s and NQS’s dresses.
- Princess Serenity’s back bow has expanded considerably and now greatly resembles a butterfly in shape.
- Her dress is no longer double-layered or nearly as flowing. Instead, it’s single-layered and much more form-fitting, hugging NQS’s body and showing off her curves.
Aside from those, there are several other more minor but still noticeable differences. Serenity no longer has her shoulder poofs (Sorry, I can’t think of any other term XD). Also, a second string of beads has been added on her bodice. Finally, NQS’s gown seems to be much longer than the Princess’s and is shown to spill out behind her in some scenes.
There are many subtle differences between the two Serenity’s accessories. Perhaps the biggest difference is the Queen’s crown (technically a tiara), which symbolizes her position as Queen of Earth. Some other differences include
- The pearl barrettes present in Princess Serenity’s hair have been replaced with said tiara
- The beaded bracelet the Princess wore is now absent
- The golden, curly earrings (often mistaken for hair) have been slightly lengthened
Seeing as how Neo-Queen Serenity is Usagi’s adult form, there are several distinct differences between her and her younger self.
- NQS appears to be a bit taller
- Her face has elongated a bit, giving her a more mature appearance
- Her eyes are softer and slant down more, once again giving her a more adult look
- NQS now wears pink lipstick
- Two strands of hair on either side of her face have lengthened and hang down, nearly reaching her shoulders
Well, there you have it! ^^
The various parts and points of Crystal Tokyo can be a bit confusing at times, so I decided to make a terminology post clarifying which term applies to what!
This is the capital of Earth in the 30th Century, where Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion rule over the Earth. It is a utopia, the heart of the new Silver Millennium, where citizens enjoy lifespans of about 1,000 years thanks to the Silver Crystal. Crystal Tokyo refers to the city as a whole.
The Crystal Palace stands in the center of Crystal Tokyo and is the city’s stronghold. It is heavily guarded and fortified against intruders because it is the home of the Royal Family. At the highest point lies Serenity’s Castle.
This is where the Royal Family and their guardians actually live. In the manga, it’s stated that the door to the Castle will only appear to those who are descendants of the Silver Millennium. The Castle itself seems to take inspiration from the Moon Kingdom of the past.
Crystal Points were places in modern-day Tokyo that would eventually form the foundations of the Crystal Palace. In the anime, the Black Moon Clan tried to contaminate these points with their Dark Power in the hopes that it would prevent the city from being built.
Today’s featured hairstyle is Neo Queen Serenity’s hair, seen frequently throughout R, particularly from episode 83 onward.
Being Usagi’s future self, Neo Queen Serenity is clearly meant to appear as an older, more graceful and elegant version of Usagi. However, we do still get to see her silly side occasionally— we learn from Diana in SuperS that the Queen and King often fake illnesses to get out of meetings, and she is quite excited by the souvenirs that Chibiusa brings to the future, asking for more. Although many have an almost goddess-like image of Neo Queen Serenity, it is clear that she is simply Usagi doing her best to bring love and hope to the people of Earth, all the while striving to maintain her own identity and raise her daughter well.
Her hair is of course similar to that of Usagi’s, but it is longer, with a more distinct curl at the end, and some looser pieces framing her face as she had when she was Princess Serenity. It seems to trail on to the floor, giving her an ethereal appearance. Rather than the hair pearls she has as Princess Serenity, she wears a crown, affirming her position as Queen.
Just an interesting note… the heart with wings on her crown somewhat resembles the Crisis Moon Compact from SuperS:
Perhaps this was an intentional reference to Usagi’s position as future royalty, and Chibiusa’s position as Princess?
I really love Serenity’s tiara! <33
In the promotional artwork, it’s Neo-Queen Serenity that’s holding Chibiusa, unlike in the anime, where Usagi had changed back into Sailor Moon just seconds before.
